2010.01.05Message from Roxanne Reeves, MRL Honorary Chair

Hello everyone,

I am pleased to support the Maritime High School Ringette League for a third consecutive year.

No less an authority than the famous Greek philosopher Plato once said that you can learn more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation. Countless educators and thinkers in the centuries since have concluded the same.

Play is crucial to our development. Through it we learn to cooperate, communicate, and negotiate with others. Many studies have actually pointed out that participation in team sports at a young age can help to build skills that are valuable later in life, whether it be in business, in one's community, or in one's family life.

The gender gap between boys and girls in team sports is narrowing. That being said, many more girls than boys tend to quit team sports as they enter their teenage years. Leagues such as this one, however, offer me comfort.

The girls I've met in this league over the years, as well as the numerous coaches and organizers who volunteer their time, provide a glowing example to anyone who seeks to get involved and impact the lives of others. These girls are bettering themselves, not to mention those around them. They are the true definition of the term “role model.”

Good luck this season and, more importantly, have fun.
